Cash for Trash

Valuable resources

A large part of the household waste can be reused or recycled as raw material for new products. Cash for Trash wants to make people aware of the value of separate waste, by paying for it. If people become aware of this, they will become dedicated to separating their waste. More waste separation leads in turn to more recycling, which is good for the environment!

What is Cash for Trash?

Cash for trash is an innovative collection method for separate waste. With Cash for Trash, people are given a sum of money per kilogram of household waste which is handed in, separated, to the Cash for Trash recycle shops.Cash for Trash is an initiative of entrepreneur Jørgen van Rijn, RebelGroup, Renewi and Social Impact Ventures. At the moment there are 7 shops in the following Dutch municipalities; Rotterdam (1 shop), Barendrecht (3 shops), Noordwijk (1 shop), The Hague (1 shop), Schiedam (1 shop, with different branding).

How does it work?

Depending on the shop, people receive money for their (packaging) plastic, old paper and cardboard, beverage cartons, textiles, small electrical goods, deep-fry fat and metals. In addition, people can hand in batteries, energy saving bulbs, cartridges and toners (without a payment). A participant registers on https://mijnafvalloont.mendixcloud.com/p/registratie. An employee inspects the waste that is handed in and if it meets the standards of Cash for Trash it is weighted. Then the money is automatically added to the account of the participant. By recycling the waste handed in to Cash for Trash, participants contribute to more sustainability in the Netherlands. Together, we save nature!
